Pros of Living in Suffolk Virginia:

  1. Land and Lot Sizes

My #1 pro of living in Suffolk, Virginia is one of the main reasons I choose to buy my first house there.  That would be the fact that the city is very open with undeveloped land and the lot sizes in many neighborhoods are huge.  The city of Suffolk is actually the largest city by land mass in the state of Virginia.  If you enjoy living without houses right on top of you, then Suffolk is a city you want to check out.

  1. Outdoor Activities and Parks

If you enjoy spending time outside then you will really like Suffolk, as one of the major pros of living in Suffolk, Virginia would have to be the availability of parks and outdoor activities in the city.  There are four major parks in the city and each offers a variety of activities from fishing, hiking, skateboarding, and much more.  One of my favorite parks to go to would be Sleepy Hole Park as it has a lot of fun things to do and tends to not be very crowded.

  1. Affordable Homes

The City of Suffolk, Virginia has a lot of different housing styles to choose from. Additionally, when compared to other cities in Hampton Roads, the cost of housing in Suffolk is much more affordable as well.  According to our local MLS, REIN, the average cost of a home in Suffolk is $362,928, which is significantly less than cities like Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

Cons of Living in Suffolk Virginia:

  1. Schools

If you have a family, then the schools will be very important to you.  When you look at the rankings on Niche.com for Suffolk, Virginia, you will see the overall grades are behind other cities in Hampton Roads.  The overall ranking for Suffolk, Virginia is a B-, this is lower than other cities such as Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.  Suffolk has 3 High Schools, with Nansemond River High School being the highest ranked according to Niche.com.

     2. Lack of Nightlife and Restaurants

The City of Suffolk Virginia does have shopping areas to choose from throughout the city.  However, I feel the city of Suffolk is lacking when it comes to overall nightlife and award-winning restaurants throughout the city.  When people in Hampton Roads mention their favorite clubs, bars, or restaurants located in Hampton Roads Virginia, the city of Suffolk doesn't come up at all in this discussion.

     3. Distance to other Cities in Hampton Roads

As I mentioned earlier, the City of Suffolk, Virginia is the largest city in Virginia when it comes to land mass.  Therefore, if you are looking to head into other cities for work or different activities the commute can be very long.  As an example from Suffolk to the Oceanfront can take 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. While I personally like the fact that Suffolk is out there, for some people this can be a negative when deciding which cities to live in throughout Hampton Roads Virginia.
